It was discovered that the first four runners of St. Jude Memphis Marathon deviated from the official course. Following the guidelines of the USA Track and Field Rules of Competition, race officials disqualified Basweti, Teklu-Tefera Deneke, Richard Kessio and Edward Kimosop. Due to cones that were inadvertently left in place from the previously run Memphis Grizzlies House 5K, Basweti and the next three runners did not run the ”true course”.

Jynocel Basweti was declared the winner setting a course record of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 21 seconds. Basweti, Deneke and Kessio will still be awarded the prize money of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, respectively because it was the cones that led to the confusion. Basweti was also given an additional $1,000 in bonus money since his time would have been a course record. But his time will not be officially recognized as a record because of his disqualification, leaving intact the mark of 2:16:48 set by Kassahan Kabiso set in 2005.

The disqualifications left Kipruto Rotich of Columbia, Mo., as the new marathon winner, followed by Hillary Kogo of Nashville and Brian Baillie of Carbondale, Ill. Those three will also receive the designated prize money. After evaluating the distance ran by the three runners, it was determined that the distance they ran was 647 feet short of the required 26.2 miles, the standard length of a marathon. Jynocel Basweti will get to keep the cash award, but not the title or the record.
