It seems like every city in America wants Google Fiber. According to the company’s Web site, “Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high-speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. “Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We’ll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.”

Ever since Google announced its plan last month cities across the U.S. have been clamoring to curry the favor of the search giant. Google has yet to reveal how it will pick where its fiber will be implemented. Company officials have invited city leaders to participate in the project, and municipalities have until March 26 to apply. This is where Memphis comes to play.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton has entering Memphis in the Google competition.  Wharton said, “Imagine a promising inner-city 7th-grader collaborating with classmates around the world while watching a live university lecture. Think of a Memphis physician treating patients in remote clinics all over the country. Imagine home viewers downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes. Universal, ultra high-speed Internet access will make all this possible-much more.”

Wharton concluded his call for support by stating: “Memphis has made great strides building a framework for its community development (think Bioworks, the City Schools Teacher Effectiveness Initiative, the Memphis Coalition for Advanced Networking, and Memphis Fast Forward). We believe Google Networks will be nothing less than transformative for Memphians in all walks of life.”

The question is, Is Memphis Tech Savvy for Google’s product? How is Memphis measured in Broadband Adoption: The percentage of home Internet users with high-speed connections. Access Options: The number of companies providing high-speed Internet access. Wi-Fi: Public wireless Internet hot spots per capita.

Memphis has 1049 businesses WiFi hotspots, 155 WiFi Hotspots are listed below:

If you look at that list you will see that areas Whitehaven, Westwood, Southside, Riverside, Hamilton, Raleigh, Frayser, kinda lack wifi, unless you’re in a McDonalds. Just like I found this list, Google has done the same. Look through the latest Yellow Pages, Memphis Business are just starting to get WEB SITES. If you don’t believe me look at a 2007 Yellow Pages if you have one, you will not see the number of web sites you see in the 2009 book. Web sites start gaining popularity in 1992, by 1996 most companies had an active website, by 1998 websites and e-mail had taken over the advertising market. I still deal with companies and people that do not have websites or e-mails. Those that do, don’t know the correct addresses. I’m saying this because Broadband Adoption, Home Internet Usage, and Access Options are key players here. Why would a company invest in a city that is not up to standards? You cannot make the citizens of the city Tech Savvy because you want a Mega Technology to give you their best and fastest service.

CLICK HERE to nominate Memphis by taking a short survey.

I’m all for getting tech attention to the city. I would love to be able to communicate with citizens by email, twitter, facebook, texting. Those that know me, know that this is something I have been venting for over the past ten years. Asking Google to consider Memphis sounds nice but look at the facts here. Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angles, Austin, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Pittsburgh, New York City, Boston, and Washington, DC are the top cities meeting UHSB attention.

I don’t know who you are but you hit the nail on the head with this post. I can’t understand this city sometimes when it comes to computers and technology. I have to commend A C for this push and I hope that Google take the city serious in considering Memphis as their choice. I do have to say, that Memphis citizens are kind of backwards when it comes to technology and computers. I too have friends that cannot remember E-mails and are scared to get an E-mail account, twitter account or do transactions over the Internet. Most of the people that are tech savvy are the 18-34 years olds and many of them just twit, facebook, myspace or text all day. None are into business that requires high-speed computer lines. Most of the people that do have high speed Internet only download videos, movies or just surf the web looking at porn. If it weren’t for FedEx, the International Airport, and UPS Memphis would be lost in technology. All of the computer outlets are in the Germantown, Cordova, East Memphis, and Midtown/Downtown area. The interest for computing power is just not here. If Google decide to pick Memphis, what will Memphis offer? Ask you average 40+ citizens if they have a twitter account, Facebook account, and blog page. If they do, ask them how often do they use or post on the page. Ask the average citizen if they have e-mail and how many times do they check their e-mail. Most of the people that use these features only have them at work not home. I’m still sending faxes, now that funny. The city is designed for shipping and handling. The mindset of the citizens is shipping and handling not high speed Internet. Look at the local news, they are always talking about visit their website, if you go there you see very few comments, then you have that racist talk show host that claim he is the mouth of the south. His blog is nothing but a tabloid of gossip. And his show is a paid advertisement. This is what locals is use to. I don’t think Google’s Ultra High Speed services is need to this.

  5. Great info! I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often. http://www.legal-attorneys.info/
